We bought this filter for my parents who will only drink filtered water as their city water has a very strong chemical taste and smell.They were using a pitcher for all their drinking water so I thought that a faucet filter would be a nice upgrade for them.The installation was a little rough.It was difficult to get the threads on the faucet to line up and form a tight seal with the filter unit.Once everything was lined up, there were no leaks.The biggest drawback is that the flow of the filtered water is pretty slow.It takes several minutes to fill a coffeepot, but it's still faster than waiting for the water to drip through the pitcher.You can flip the switch to get unfiltered water which flows normally.

I had been using the smarller Britta pitcher(holds 5 glasses).That works wonderfully by the way,just too small for larger families or seriouswater drinkers. The only complaint with that was the size caused me to have to fill it constanly as I drink a lot of water. So I decided to upgrade. First I purchased the faucet mount filter and was disappointed.The thing moves slower than molassas!I returned that and was going to get a standard pitcher filter setup but decided to go with this one because it was onlyfour dollars more than a pitcher that held ten glasses of water.This provides 18 glasses of the best tasting water ever.I live in an area where our water is reputed to be among the best in the country(at least that what the local officials say) and this only improves on it!!Now I fill this up,put it on a shelf in the fridge and voila,I have great tasting ice cold water at my fingertips.I think this is much more cost effective than buying bottled water.The best part of it all?My kids have now become water drinkers!!It might be because of the easy to use tap,which by the way makes this much more convienant to use as opposed to the pitcher.Although they swear that they drink more water now because it "just tastes better".

We always kept two boxes of these on hand as replacements when we used our Brita filter pitcher (we went to an in-line because we drink so much filtered water --we'd go through 40 gallons in no time, but that is a LOT of water.) There are three "gotcha's" on these filters to be aware of:
1. Do not let the filter dry out. When the pitcher is empty, you should refill the reservoir right away. When the pitcher is full or partly full, the bottom of the filter is in the water and keeping moist.
2. The filter needs to be soaked and flushed exactly according to directions. Some of the charcoal packing comes off in the flushing process, and if you don't take care of it, you will have specks in the water. This is no big problem, just something to be aware of.
3. Never put overly warm or hot water through the filter.
If you follow the directions, you will have, as we did, gallons of water that cost a lot less and taste as good or better than the water you buy in plastic containers in the supermarket.

Review of Culligan IC-EZ-1 EZ-Change Icemaker/Drinking Water Filter, 3,000 Gallons

My refrigerator has an ice maker, but no built-in filter.For years, I had been buying the snap in in-line type, but the prices have been creeping up and the availability has been diminishing.

This Culligan model has them beat. The price is good, it's easy to install, and very easy to replace cartridges. If you have an existing plastic water line, installation is trivial. This also works with copper lines, and is not much more difficult to use with them, except the instructions are not clear. The outside box says you can use either copper or plastic, but the included instructions don't mention the copper, or the additional tools needed to file the edge as the outside box mentions. Despite this, installation is trivial enough that it's not likely to be an issue.

If you do have copper, and need to fit things in a tight space, you might need to replace one end of the tube with plastic since short lengths of copper are relatively inflexible.

I also got one for my instant hot water tap on my kitchen sink. It's not "specially designed" for it as are the ones that are recommended for those, but they all take the same size tubes and have cold water coming in and going out. This one is far cheaper, does everything I want to make the water taste good, and there are enough Culligan options for anybody who wants a different level of filtration that you can pick what you need.

Review of PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack

I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out.I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking.They typically last about 3 months for me.I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn't it?For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly.I can't speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER!It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while.The filter would stop flowing within a day after that.The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box.I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.

Review of PUR 2 Stage Water Pitcher Replacement Filter

This item is actually great.But, beware.Iordered this item thinking it is going to be the CRF-950L like they advertise.But I was sent out the CRZ-950Z instead.They are the same filter, except that the L as a monitor top as it says in the description and the box has the word Ultimate on it.The 950Z has neither feature.Again, they are the same filter (as far as I can tell), but this is not what is advertised nor what I purchased. I am now on my second return with Amazon and will continue to return it untill they send me the correct item.

**EDIT 10-28-06**Well I have returned this item several times and got no where with amazon.The item was supposedly unavailable the last week or so and now has been brought back with a different picture and is now listed as a 950Z.But, beware the description still list it has having a monitor.The 950Z does not have a monitor to let you know when to change the filter.This is not the first time that I have noticed discription problems with Amazon.Though neither were so bad that I could not use the items, they were just not as expected or slightly off as described.

Hi receive the product exactly the estimated arrival date in perfect conditions. Installation was very easy, and we notice clearer water and ice, my old filter was 2 years old, and I haven't notice any bad taste or decoloration in the ice, but after Intall a new one there is certaily a difference in the "taste" of the water and the size and color of the Ice. I recommend this product, and specially the 3 pack, since it eliminate the need to get one every 6 or 12 months, you have enogh for a minimum of 2 years or so.

Review of Frigidaire PureSource Water Filter, WFCB

We did not receive the product advertised.

The advertisement states you will receive a "Frigidaire PureSourcePlus Ice & Water Filter (WFCB, 46-9906)". The product did not come in a Frigidaire PureSourcePlus package...just plastic wrap. I installed the filter and the water came out jet black. I ordered two of them so I tried the second filter, and the water was jet black again. This has never happened with Frigidaire filter.

I checked the invoice and it said they are Frigidair WFCB/RC-200 "Compatible" Replacement Regrigeragor Water Filters. If the company is selling a "compatible" filter, and not the manufacturer's filter why does the Amazon site describes and has a picture of the Frigidaire filter?

I e-mailed the company and they replied "Thank you for your order and email. From your description your new filters need to be flushed."

I ended up spending a lot more money and bought a Frigidaire filter but the water now does not taste the same.

This has been my worst online purchase experiences with Amazon.

In addition, while we did not request a refund the company subsequently wrote back and stated that they would credit our account since we were not happy with the purchase.While the company's customer service department was prompt and responsive, the Amazon website description should reflect the item being purchased in order to avoid confusion.

You gotta hand it to Maytag - they made replacing the water filter very simple.Took all of about 30 seconds from start to finish.And about 20 seconds of that was wiping up the water that dripped out of the old filter when I pulled it out, so the next change should go even better;-)

We have a family of six and we drink water almost exclusively, so I went ahead and changed the filter at six months just like the owner's guide recommended.However, I could see no evidence that the filter was near its end of life and am convinced that I can get more use out of the filters than the suggested six months.I will try to keep an eye on things, but without a little window I really have no way other than flow to know what is going on.

And that is why I gave this a rating of four stars.The filter seems to work wonderfully and replacement is a breeze, but I would be happier if I could look at the state of the filter while it is in use.

Review of Brita Refrigerator Replacement Filters GE

I decided to replace the original filter on my GE refrigerator after about 10 months when the "change filter" light came on. I went to the local hardware store and found a replacement for $49 plus tax. It seemed expensive, so I decided to check Amazon instead and found these along with the OEM GE filters.
I was reluctant to try a filter other than the GE just to save a few bucks, but if they are identical, why waste money? Besides, Brita is probably better known than GE for filters. Anyway, the filter looks, fits and works just like the original. I have noticed no difference in water flow or noise. The water tastes clean and looks clear.
One note - as per the instructions you should pre-fill the filter at the tap before installation and then run about 10 glasses of water through the new filter before use to stabilize the flow.
As for the vendor - Fridge Filters, I found that you cannot track their packages online as you can with most things purchased from Amazon, but the filter arrived in Florida 4 days after my order was placed. I gave the product and the vendor 5 stars, not that I get particularly excited about a water filter, but there were no negatives to take a star away.

Review of Whirlpool 4396710 PUR Side by Side Refrigerator Push Button Cyst Reducing Water Filter, 1-Pack

I have a Kenmore refrigerator form Sears that I bought about a year and a half ago. Kenmore is actually made by Whirlpool and although the filter this replaced was labeled Kenmore, this is the exact same filter but labeled Whirlpool instead. I looked it up on the Sears site and they wanted $50 for the same filter. The price is a steal and even though it says 6 months I used it for over a year since I have soft water in my house and only one person. My fridge has a 6 month built in timer that goes from green to orange to red when the 6 months is up. I thought it might be based on actual usage, but it's not, because it went red at exactly 6 months and I use far less water than most other households. I have no idea why more time would harm a filter, as far as I'm concerned it's just a marketing tactic to get you to buy them more often then needed, like oil changes every 3,000 miles.

This filter is rated at 750 gallons capacity. If the consumer uses one gallon of water per day in the form of water from the refrigerator dispenser and ice from the ice dispenser, the filter will last 750 days; i.e., just over TWO years. In general, there is no reason to replace the filter yearly, unless you have a really yuccky water source.

In a small household of two adults, the filter should last considerably longer than two years. Furthermore, with the addition of a filtered water dispenser at the sink (such as a GE undercounter unit), the refrigerator filter would be functional for a few years. The undercounter units have a quite large capacity and some use two filter cartridges.

We purchased a new Whirlpool refrigerator earlier this year.The new refrigerator has all the marvelous improvements developed in the last ten years for refrigerators, including a water filter.

The water filter really does deliver better water.However, the water filter seems quite expensive to me.Whirlpool, and other manufacturer's that use this type of filter, recommend the filter be replaced twice a year, whether you need to replace the filter or not.

The filter is relatively easy to replace, but be aware of what happens when you pull the filter.To remove the old filter you push a button next to the filter, typically to the left of the filter.Then pull on the cap covering the filter and pull the filter out.Make a note of how the filter was oriented when you pull it out.

The filter will now begin dripping water, so have a paper towel or small bowl available to let the water drip into.You can either let the filter finish dripping into a sink, or throw it into a plastic bag that you can seal to keep the water from dripping out of the bag.Be sure you remove the cover from the filter before you toss it.On our Whirlpool the cover twists counterclockwise for removal.

Install the filter cover onto the new filter.It takes just a twist to lock it into place.Holding the filter so that the two straight pieces on the end of the filter are vertical, with the open portion of the filter cover oriented on the bottom, slide the new filter straight into the filter cavity until the button on the left clicks to let you know the new filter is locked into place.Note that these instructions are for a Whirlpool, but I believe most other refrigerators are similar.You should be ready to go!

Had I known refrigerator water filters were so expensive I might have gone with a refrigerator without one, though our local water has a lot of chlorine in it (which is filtered out by the filter).

As with many modern conveniences, this water filter represents a convenience that you did not know you needed until you had it.Now that I have it, I am wondering whether I want it since I have to spend a chunk of change each year in filter replacements.Oh well.I guess I can sleep more soundly knowing that the water filter is now removing a bunch of stuff from my water that my body either did not want or need.

Shipped immediately, took it out of the box, ignored all the instructions and warnings as men do, unscrewed the other one, put this one in, filled up 2 big glasses of water to "flush it" and that was it.

Maybe 5mins worth of effort?

Not sure what else to say in a review of this item, worked great in our GE fridge.
