Review of GE FXWTC SmartWater Whole House Filter Replacement Cartridge

[this review is of the filtration system in which this filter is used] A product that looks good in theory but fails in practice. While it was in it worked well, but you have to change the filter cartridge every 3 months, and that's where the trouble started.Although I carefully followed directions about changing it (including lubricating an o-ring with food-grade silicone grease), the cartridge holder is now frozen in place and cannot be removedto change the filter cartridge by any amount of force that I can exert. Made 4 phone calls to GE service, tried everything they recommended (not much). They even suggested a strap wrench, and a GE service rep said "we hear this once in a while from our customers" (cartridge holder can't be removed), an exact quote.I put enough force on it to cause a small leak in one of the connecting pipes. There is a one year warranty (this unit failed 1 year and 2 weeks after install), but you have to remove the unit and return it intact to place of purchase, and of course I am not going to be able to get it off intact -- that's the problem!I will have to get a plumber to cut out the filter, re-pipe the incoming water line to bypass the filter location, and throw it away. That's another $100 or so.Buy at your own risk.
